We arrived in Villavicencio (Meta), Colombia, on December 1st, 1991. Our final destination was La Aldea de la Aurora in the rural zone of the city, close to the Vanguardia Airport. We settled down immediately and began our missionary work. My wife and daughters would gather the neighborhood children to offer them friendship, have fun and to share the gospel with them. Some families responded with interest and gratefulness for the attention given to their children but we had great opposition from a neighbor lady who simply hated evangelicals. Nevertheless, we lived happily in this neighborhood for two years and it was the place God put us in to begin planting the seed of His Word in Villavicencio.
Shortly after, our co-workers, Jack and Sharon McManus encouraged us to look for a place where we could begin a program for training Indian leaders. We purchased a small property and very soon began to receive work teams that came to help us develop the property and to make beds, tables and all the furniture we needed to carry on with the work.
God blessed us with the presence of Mateo Dubocq, a 22 year old man who decided to come to Colombia to serve God. He helped us in the work with the Indians, which at one time amounted to 24 young men. Mateo also taught at the Colegio Centro Educativo Betania, a Bible school founded in 1994. The students would receive 6 hours of biblical education as well as Christian leadership training to be put into practice in their communities.
At about this time the Bethany Reformed Church was planted. Today it is known as the Iglesia Protestante Labranza de Dios, Sínodo Betania de la Reforma de Colombia. It was started with our family members, Bélgica and Leonel, our three daughters, and two other individuals who God brought to us.
During years, attendance remained at 30. We met in a school room at the Colegio Centro Educativo Betania, which today is known as the Fundación Gimnasio Campestre Betania. Attendance reached 300 on Sundays during the time we met at the Hotel del Llano in the city of Villavicencio. Today we have an average attendance of 120 on Sundays, with 70 registered members. In 2008 the church Lluvias de Gracia led by Pastor Mauricio Caicedo was born from a division. This proved to be a very difficult time for us, but God has turned into a blessing because we have been comforted and sustained by His grace.
At the present time we have contact with the Cubeo Indians of the Vaupés and the Yucuna of the Mirití River in the Amazon. In the near future, we plan to send Fabio and Diana Cano, with their young child Nathan, as missionaries to this area.
In 1995 we began the radio program Estudiemos la Biblia in Radio Macarena of the Cadena Autentica de Colombia. We continued until 1998 when our contract was not renewed due to certain aspects of our doctrine. We then continued using the Voz de los Centauros de la Cadena Caracol de Colombia and do so until the present time.
The school, the Bible Institute for Indians and the radio program were the instruments God used to plant the Bethany Reformed Church. Today we continue to pastor the Church, emphasizing the development of leaders by means of the International Seminary of Miami and its collaborative program with the Church of God. Through servants of God of high academic, intellectual and spiritual stature, they have been a great blessing to us with their help and support for this theological program. Among them are Cornelio Hegeman, Mateo Dubocq, David Green, Guillermo Green, Bruce McDowell and Noé Acosta.
We recently were blessed with the visit of Doctor Cornelio Hegeman, who shared with us a study on 1 Peter. A good number of church members, as well as all the seminary students, were able to attend this conference and it was a great blessing. At the moment we are concluding said apostolic study. We were also blessed with a visit from Noé and Mimi Acosta, accompanied by the Lever family. Doctor Noé brought a magnificent conference on THE GRACE OF GOD IN THE GOSPEL OF JOHN and Mrs. Acosta shared with the church ladies on the letter to the Philippian church, which was a great blessing to our ladies as well as a challenge to serve the Lord with the talents and blessings He has given them.
Presently, we have Reverend Matt Dubocq and his family with us, bringing us a course on the book of Zephaniah.
The work continues to grow here as well as in the city of Cali. The joy of the Lord is evident. We wanted to share with you these memories to show you what the Lord has done in Colombia.
Through friendship, giving, prayers and fellowship, you have been a vital part of our ministry. It is a great source of joy for us when you visit us and can see for yourselves what God is doing. Llegamos a Villavicencio (Meta), Colombia, el 01 de diciembre de 1991, a la Aldea de la Aurora en zona rural de la ciudad, muy cerca al Aeropuerto Vanguardia. Nos establecimos y de inmediato iniciamos la obra. Mi esposa y mis hijas reunían los niños de los vecinos en el condominio para ofrecerles compañerismo, sana amistad y diversión y para hablarles del evangelio. Algunas familias respondieron con interés y gratitud por lo ofrecido a sus niños, pero encontramos también una fuerte oposición de parte de una señora sumamente católica, vecina nuestra y que sencillamente odiaba a los protestantes. No obstante, nuestra estadía por dos años en el condominio de la Aurora fue grato y agradable para mi y para la familia y fue el lugar donde el Señor nos colocó para iniciar a sembrar semillas del Evangelio en Villavicencio.
De Inmediato, nuestros compañeros de equipo Jack y Sharon McManus, nos animaron a buscar un lugar para iniciar con nuestro programa de formación de líderes indígenas. Encontramos una humilde propiedad que compramos y casi de inmediato se iniciaron las visitas de grupos de trabajo que nos ayudaron a adecuar el sitio y a dotarlo de camas, mesas, y toda clase de muebles que necesitabamos para nuestra labor.
Dios nos bendijo con la presencia de Mateo Dubocq, un joven de 24 años que decidió venir a Colombia para servir al Señor y nos ayudó a llevar a cabo nuestra labor con los muchachos indígenas que llegaron a ser 24 en su mejor momento y los cuales, además de recibir educación formal en el Colegio Centro Educativo Betania, el cual se fundó en el año 1.994, recibían 6 horas diarias de instrucción bíblica y eran formados para ejercer un liderazgo cristiano en sus comunidades.
Por estos tiempos se fundó la Iglesia Betania de la Reforma, hoy dia denominada, Iglesia Protestante Labranza de Dios, Sínodo Betania de la Reforma de Colombia, la cual inició con mis tres hijas, nosotros dos (Bélgica y Leonel) y otras dos personas, a las cuales se sumaron los estudiantes indígenas aunque temporalmente y otras personas que Dios trajo poco a poco. Por muchos años no superamos las 30 personas en la iglesia y nos reuníamos en un salón de clase del Centro Educativo Betania, institución que hoy día se llama Fundación Gimnasio Campestre Betania.
La iglesia llegó a Recibir hasta 300 personas los domingos cuando funcionó en el Hotel del Llano de la ciudad de Villavicencio. Hoy Día recibe un promedio de 120 personas los domingos y tiene 70 miembros registrados. La Iglesia se dividió en dos en el año 2008 y surgió la Iglesia Lluvias de Gracia, liderada por el Pastor Mauricio Caicedo; momento doloroso para nosotros pero que Dios ha convertido en una verdadera bendición pues hemos gozado de su consolación y su socorro oportuno.
Hoy en día tenemos contacto con los indígenas Cubeos del Vaupés y los Yucuna del río Mirití en el Amazonas. Estamos en el pensamiento de enviar como misionero a Fabio Cano y su esposa Diana, quienes tienen un hijito que se llama Nathan y quieren servir al Señor en esta área y para eso se prepararon.
En el año 1.995 iniciamos el programa radial "Estudiemos la Biblia" en Radio Macarena de la Cadena Autentica de Colombia y estuvimos allí hasta 1.998 cuando nos cortaron el contrato por asuntos de nuestra doctrina. Pasamos entonces a la "Voz de los Centauros" de la Cadena Caracol de Colombia y estamos allí hasta el día de hoy.
El colegio, el Instituto Bíblico para indígenas y el programa radial, fueron los instrumentos que Dios nos uso para plantar la Iglesia Betania de la Reforma.
Hoy día, seguimos pastoreando la Iglesia, regentando la formación de líderes por medio del Seminario Internacional de MIami y su programa en convenio con la Iglesia y Dios nos ha bendecido grandemente con la ayuda y el apoyo en este programa de formación teológica con siervos de Dios de inigualable estatura académica, intelectual y especialmente espiritual. Son entro otros, Cornelio Hegeman, Mateo Dubocq, David Green, Guillermo Green, Brus McDowall, Noé Acosta.
Acabamos de ser bendecidos con la Visita del Doctor Cornelio Hegeman, quien introdujo con una conferencia el Estudio de 1Pedro. A esta conferencia pudo asistir una buena cantidad de miembros de la iglesia y todos los seminaristas y fue de gran bendición para todos nosotros, en estos momentos estamos terminando el estudio de dicha carta apóstolica.
También nos han visitado Noé y Mimi Acosta, acompañados por La Familia Lever. Noe nos trajo una magnifica conferencia sobre LA GRACIA EN EL EVANGELIO DE SAN JUAN y Mimi Acosta compartió con las damas de la iglesia la Carta a los Filipenses y fue de gran bendición para las damas y un tremendo desafío para servir al Señor con los dones y las bendiciones que Él les ha dado.
En estos momentos contamos con la visita del Reverendo Matt Dubocq y su familia, quien nos trae el curso sobre el libro de Sofonías.
La obra está moviéndose y sigue creciendo. La obra crece en la ciudad de Cali y el gozo del Señor por todas estas cosas no cesa.
Quicimos compartir con ustedes estos recuerdos en forma muy rápida y mostrarles lo que el Señor ha hecho en Colombia gracias al apoyo y respaldo que Ustedes queridos lectores nos han brindado con su compañerismo, su amistad, sus oraciones y sus donaciones.
Es motivo de mucho gozo cuando nos visitan y con sus propios ojos pueden ver la obra del Señor. Les invitamos a venir a Colombia y a invertir tesoros para el cielo, en este campo del Señor tan necesitado en su desarrollo y crecimiento.
